Why Trade?...........Why Women?
Because trade liberalisation is affecting women's lives on a global scale
These Web Pages on Trade Liberalisation and Women are part of UNIFEM'S programme on Women and International Trade. The aim is to bring together relevant data on trade issues and their gender-differentiated impact on women. These Pages are a foundation for an accumulative and accessible body of knowledge that can be used as a resource tool for women's economic empowerment.
This project was conceptualised and implemented by ENGENDER for UNIFEM. It is an output from a Regional Conference on "Women, Trade and Sustainable Livelihoods in Southeast Asia", held in Bangkok, Thailand (14-16 November 1996), organised by UNIFEM and ENGENDER . Papers from the conference have been published as Trade liberalisation: challenges and opportunities for women in Southeast Asia and beyond. Because of this background, there is currently a slight preponderance of Southeast Asian data on these Pages. However, these Pages will eventually be expanded into a global site that will be as comprehensive and as up-to-date as possible.
