United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM): Working for Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality

UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women

The United Nations Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women (TFEVAW) is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism that supports local, national and regional efforts to combat gender-based violence.

These efforts have:

  • linked activists and advocates from all parts of the world;
  • shown how small, innovative projects impact laws, policies and attitudes;
  • helped break the wall of silence, moving the issue onto public agendas everywhere; and
  • strengthened the implementation of laws and plans of action on violence against women.

With grants currently ranging from US$300,000 to US$1 million, Trust Fund projects conduct public education and awareness campaigns, build coalitions, involve law-enforcement, judicial and government agencies, train educators, healthcare personnel and police officials to respond to and prevent violence. Many projects strive to alter community attitudes and involve men as allies.

Please Contribute to the Trust Fund

Contributions from a small number of governments, a few foundations, UNIFEM National Committees and others have traditionally enabled the Trust Fund to award US$1–5 million in grants annually. However, for every project funded, there are at least ten turned away. The overwhelming response demonstrates the commitment worldwide to expand work on the ground to combat gender-based violence. But the challenge is clear: the lack of resources severely constrains the scale and scope of comprehensive activities to change attitudes and laws, build constituency and accountability, and provide shelter and services.

UNIFEM's documentation of the years of work by activists and other organizations, as well as its own work, has shown that the kind of change needed requires a coordinated and sustained effort on many levels. While demand for the Trust Fund soars and the recognition of the need to confront this worldwide problem grows, financial resources to the Trust Fund lag far behind.
