In a video statement for International Women's Day 2006, UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman shines a spotlight on the need to end violence against women, particularly violence against the hundreds of thousands of women and girls caught in the crossfire of conflict.
"Sexual violence is a weapon of war, an instrument of terror that hurts and punishes women and men of the other side, fractures communities, and forces women to flee their homes," Ms Kidman says. "These crimes must not be hidden by silence and shame. Those responsible must be held accountable. We must protect women and children caught up in conflict situations, and we must care for women affected by sexual and gender-based violence."
