Austrian National Committee for UNIFEM Donates 10,000 Euro to UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women

The Austrian National Committee for UNIFEM, represented by Ms. Julia Girardi and Ms. Marlene Parenzan, presented a donation of EUR 10,000 to UNIFEM Deputy Director Moez Doraid on 3 March 2008. The donation comes in response to UNIFEM's Say NO to Violence against Women campaign and will benefit the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. UNIFEM manages this Trust Fund on behalf of the UN system.
The money was raised during a fundraising dinner under the patronage of the wife of the Austrian Federal President, Ms. Margit Fischer, in November 2007, when the Chair of the Austrian National Committee, Lilly Sucharipa, together with the President of the Austrian National Assembly, Ms. Barbara Prammer, invited leading personalities from business and industry.
The Austrian National Committee for UNIFEM, which works exclusively through a team of committed volunteers, will continue to support the Say NO to Violence against Women campaign. On the occasion of International Women's Day, it will promote the campaign at an event in the Austrian Parliament to encourage parliamentarians to sign up.
In the past years, the Austrian National Committee has concentrated much of its attention on South-East Europe. Part of the money raised at the dinner will therefore go to the Kosova Women's Network, a longstanding UNIFEM partner, to promote better access for women to quality health care, in particular in rural areas of Kosovo. The money will be used to finance the operation of a mobile health care unit offering gynaecological check-ups and breast cancer screening to women regardless of their ethnicity, religious or political beliefs.
