WHY:
Violence against women is perhaps the most pervasive human rights violation — whether women are subjected to domestic violence, trafficked across borders, or the victims of systematic rape in conflict zones. It is estimated that one in three women will be a victim of violence in her lifetime. UNIFEM has consistently advocated to bringing global attention to the issue. The task continues, however, to be an uphill battle, as fear and shame prevent many women from speaking out. Increased awareness and visibility are still badly needed, along with additional resources.
