Details

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an annual international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates — from 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, International Human Rights Day — in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights, and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlighted other significant dates, including 1 December, World AIDS Day, and 6 December, which marked the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

The 16 Days Campaign was used as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.

The theme for this year's campaign was Celebrate 16 Years of 16 Days: Advance Human Rights ‹–› End Violence Against Women. It celebrated activists who have made the campaign a success and honoured women rights defenders who have suffered intimidation and violence for their activism and/or have given their lives fighting for gender equality. This year also commemorated progress on addressing violence against women in our communities, nations, regions and around the world and called for reflection on how to continue to advance this work.

Sponsored by: Center for Women's Global Leadership and numerous NGOs and governmental institutions througout the world.
