Women in Mongolia: Mapping Progress under Transition

Women in Mongolia: Mapping Progress under Transition

Author/Editor(s): Nalini Burn, Oyuntsetseg Oidov

Mongolia has been in a state of transition since the dismantling of the Soviet Union. The economy has suffered - the economy, employment and education have been on a steady decline in the past decade reaching numbers that have not been seen since the mid twentieth century. In particular, Mongolian women have been affected.

"Women in Mongolia" tells of these women's experiences in the context of the political and economic transformation of their country.  Giving the readers a rare glimpse into the lives of Mongolian women, the publication shares reports of women encouraged to bear many children, inadequate health care or resources, and high rates of maternal mortality.

By analyzing the current status of Mongolian women, the publication describes what these women need to advance.  Concrete suggestions for improving their social and economic status are combined with recommendations for increasing their political participation. Case studies of individual women highlight this informative publication.

"Women in Mongolia" researches the present situation in Mongolia, highlights successes and provides recommendations towards advancing gender equality. Without fail, it paints a fascinating picture of gender issues in a remote and less-documented culture.
