Women
on the Front Line (DevTV
2008). This video documentary series, produced for the BBC and presented
by Annie Lennox, shines a light on violence against women and girls.
The series takes the front to homes, villages, and cities of our world
where a largely unreported war against females is being waged.
- Morocco [ Part
1 | Part
2 ] (UNIFEM and UNFPA). We discover the prominent
role women had in resisting repressive rule and who put their lives
on the line to fight for truth and justice and independence. This
two part video outlines the struggle and achievements of women’s
rights activists in Morocco using CEDAW as an advocacy tool, which
led to the 2004 reform to the Family Code and subsequent gains in
women’s rights attainment as a result.
- Austria [ Part
1 | Part
2 ] (UNFPA). One in five Austrian women are victims of
male violence, with 95 percent of cases reported occurring
in the home. The police now have the power to eject men perpetrators
of violence from their houses. Rosa Logar, Executive Director
of the Domestic Abuse Intervention Centre in Vienna, speaks about
how her organization used the CEDAW Optional Protocol to seek
justice for women victims of violence from the Austrian state.
She brought the murders of Sahide Goecke and Fatma Yildirim —
two women who were killed by their husbands — to the attention
of the Committee for their consideration.
CEDAW Implementation and Reporting: A Training Tool for Pacific
Island Countries (UNIFEM 2007) [ Part
1 | Part
2 ]. A number
of Pacific Island states have ratified the Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). This two-part
video series serves as a guide to these nations and is a training
tool that delegates can use when preparing to report to the committee.
The first part looks at the progress made by Pacific Island nations
that use and report on CEDAW. The second part is a training video
that looks at the introduction of CEDAW mock sessions in the region
and how it has helped delegates in their preparations.
Women
Hold Up the Sky (People’s Movement for Human Rights
Learning 1999). A dramatic video series of eight short training videos
for learning about CEDAW and its relevance to women’s daily lives.
Engaging true stories are rendered in short narrative dramas that
capture and celebrate the complexity, strength and vibrant determination
of women living in a globalized, patriarchal world. The Dramas
were based on actual life stories selected from around the world
and filmed in four countries. The specific drama does not necessarily
depict a situation in a specific country. The accompanying manual
was prepared as a set of guidelines for the training of trainers
to adopt to their own national and local needs, and to introduce
CEDAW across their societies. Read
