UNAMA Photo of the Day

photos of women in afghanistan

UNAMA Photo of the Day: 6 Mar 2010. Mariam Alimi (UNAMA)

A portrait of a 12-year-old Afghan “Kuchi” girl in a nomad camp at Karte-Now in Kabul.

She and her family arrived from Paktia province and are staying in the capital city for the rest of the winter.

If her family allows it, she dreams of going to school one day. The National Education Strategic Plan 2006-2011 tasks the Ministry of Education to ensure that at least 35 per cent of Kuchi children have access to formal education by 2010.

The government has built over 10 schools for Kuchis in the south and the east, and established 26 learning centres for Kuchi children who settle temporarily in a given area, according to the Ministry of Education.

This is the fifth of a series of photographs that were taken by young Afghan women photographers to commemorate International Women's History Month and International Women's Day on 8 March.
