Ending Violence Against Women
Violence against women is the most pervasive human rights violation — whether women are subjected to domestic violence, trafficked across borders, or the victims of systematic rape in conflict zones. Studies have shown that as many as one out of three women worldwide will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
Despite great progress in laws and policies to address gender-based violence, there is a large implementation gap. The UNIFEM- administered UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women supports innovative strategies to bridge this gap — working across multiple levels and sectors simultaneously, strengthening community ownership and including men as partners. In Eastern and Southern Africa, for example, men from all walks of life spread the message against violence through music, dance and drama in rural and urban communities. In Tanzania, the Women's Judges Association received a grant to train judges and magistrates on jurisprudence and equality. And in China, a UN Trust Fund grant helped expand the network of support stations for domestic violence cases.
